Over the last two years, I’ve done a lot of drawing, and for the most part, I’ve enjoyed it. Sometimes I’ve been disappointed in the results, sometimes I’ve been frustrated, but overall it’s been fun.
But never has it been as much fun as yesterday!
When I looked at my “Inktober” prompts and saw UNDERWATER combining with MYTHICAL CREATURE, I gasped, and then decided to go for it. Yes, I would create some mythical water-dwelling beast. I wasn’t sure how, but I was determined to try.
I used a regular #2 graphite pencil first and created the basic outline of this beast. Next, I grabbed my Faber-Castell pen set and set to work. At first, it was so-so…until I started adding the scales. Suddenly my sea creature came to life!

Oh, it was a tedious process to add those scales one by one, but I loved doing it. I have never had so much fun drawing before! And best of all, I loved what I saw emerging on the page.
I wasn’t too sure how I wanted to create the water, but it really didn’t matter. I was so very pleased by — and proud of — my drawing that it’s all right if my water looks a bit wonky.
I couldn’t wait to show my sea monster to our grandsons. They approved, of course.
Who would have thought that my favorite “work of art” would be one I created with pen-and-ink? It goes to show how important it is that we sometimes step out of our comfort zones and try different things.
I’m loving Inktober!
I extra like this one.
