Autumn officially begins for us tomorrow, on September 22. My husband and I have been having our own “fall celebration” this weekend — although it’s involved a lot of work. It’s our weekend to clear out what’s left in the garden, tend to necessary yard work, and make plans for next year’s growing season. We’ve bought tulip bulbs, and as soon as I finish writing this blog post, we’ll be going outside together to dig and plant.
We’re also celebrating with an autumn “thanksgiving” dinner to use up the last of our garden’s produce. For dessert, I’ve made a spice cake with cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice. Spices always remind me of fall. During our dinner, we’ll take a few moments to think of all the blessings we have and give thanks for our home and family.
I haven’t spent much time in the studio this weekend. For me, the beginning of the fall season is almost like a special holiday. This is my favorite time of the year. It’s an ideal time to enjoy the beauty of the earth before winter comes.
I’ve tried to capture a little of that beauty in watercolor, keeping my strokes loose and free, dabbling here and there with earthy colors.

I hope you like my painting. Now, I’m grabbing my sweatshirt and heading outside to join my husband. He’s already got a blazing fire burning in the fire pit, and it’s time to put those bulbs in the ground so they’ll be ready to bloom when spring comes.
Happy autumn!
That’s beautiful!

Such a nice impressionist view with early fall colors! And the firepit and planting bulbs sounds really nice!

Yes, it was a lovely weekend. It’s always a little sad to see the garden pulled up for the year. We do still have a few canteloupe growing, and my husband left a pepper plant. I’ll need to harvest what’s on it. Now we’re already planning for what we’ll do differently in the garden next year. Plus we have trees that will be delivered later this year.

Happy spring! That’s a beautiful time of the year, too. Enjoy. Right now, I wouldn’t mind having a little bit of rain here. A drizzly autumn morning always puts me in a very creative state of mind.
