Here Comes the Sun

I love painting landscapes, and I do fairly well with them in oil. With watercolors… that’s another thing altogether. Once in a while I come up with a landscape that’s not too awful, but most of the time the best I can do with watercolors is play around, let the paints do whatever they want and call it abstract watercolor art. It’s fun, but it’s not really art.

But why not combine the ideas of landscapes and abstraction? Why not let my watercolors play a little bit while creating a landscape at the same time? That’s what I tried this morning.

Sun Coming Through

Mostly what I wanted to do was to create a sky with the sunlight breaking through. It’s not the best sky I’ve ever created, and it’s far from my best landscape, but it was something fun to play around with. I was also hesitant to use too much yellow. I didn’t want my sky or water turning too green.

All in all, my watercolor playtime was fun, and I’m happy to see a bit of light shining through.

      2. I agree! I did “watercolor warm-ups” for several weeks, and it was always fun. It’s a really great way to start the day. I’m not a watercolorist actually, and I’m moving back now to the oil painting that I love, so I’m no longer doing the daily warm-ups. I will get my watercolors out and play a bit now and then though. 🙂
