Drooling

I may be a bit mixed up on days and prompts, but I’m not going to worry about it. In fact, I’m not sure I want to continue following the official prompt list — or any prompt list. Maybe I will, maybe I won’t. It all depends on how I’m feeling.

On Saturday morning, I was in a monstrous mood. Rain was pouring down, and it was a good time to curl up in a comfy chair and do a bit of drawing. Here’s what I came up with:

My drooling monster was fun to create, although I can’t take full credit for this fellow. I browsed around online a bit to look at playful monsters, then borrowed rather freely from creatures I saw.

Of course, I’m not a playful artist by nature, but I discovered that I love drawing monsters like this because it’s all right if their proportions are a bit off. It doesn’t matter if their legs are a little misshapen, their eyes a little crooked, their tails a bit too long or too short or anything else.

Afterward, though, I realized there was nothing the least bit educational I could add for my little monster — unless…

Off I went on a little scientific study on taxonomy — the science of classification. All living creatures are classified by the following:

For the sake of Inktober blogging, we’re going to consider my doodle monsters as living, breathing creatures — fire-breathing, maybe? — and for the sake of simplicity, we’re only going to deal with species, genus, and family.

So, I declare this tongue-wagging monster to be a member of the Doodlae family. He is obviously of the Monsterus genus, and definitely he is from the droolus species.

I hope Monsterus droolus brings a smile to your face. Just don’t get too close. He does like to lick.
