I started a new oil painting this morning. It’s going to be a bit of a practice painting, a chance for me to work on new techniques I’ve been learning.
Of course, I always love painting skies, so for this particular painting I decided to place the horizon line very low — I’m working on a vertical canvas — thereby giving myself lots of room for the sky.
It’s been raining here most of the morning, so I think the weather influenced my mood in painting. When my husband came in after a short walk outside, he commented that the sky in my painting looked a lot like our skies this morning.
This is only a portion of the sky I’ve created, but I was pleased with it and wanted to share.

I thought about adding more clouds — or maybe not. I like the sky as is. If I change my mind, I can paint in more clouds later.
For now, though, I’m feeling happy about what I’ve painted this morning. If the rest of the scene pleases me as much as this sky has, I will be a very happy artist.
Love how ethereal this feels. Very well done!

Thank you, Margaret. One of the things I’m working on now is learning more about creating mood/atmosphere in our paintings. I’m really enjoying all that I’m learning and doing.
